We caught up with Mac Danzig at the Phoenix Fight Club in Vancouver, hot on the heels of his first loss in ManMMA at the hands of B.J. Penn at ManMMA 68. Danzig has been a bit of a surprise story since his debut with Team Phoenix at ManMMA 58; a KO victory over heavily favored Jim Miller. "I don't know about a surprise, exactly. I'm comfortable with my own abilities." claims Danzig, "I remember being pretty nervous that night being my debut, but once I settled in and got to the task at hand, got into a zone and rhythm. I guess the surprise for me was that I started seeing openings in Jim's defenses and I was able to break through in the 2nd round and down he went." Danzig's generally not known for his stand up game, though his main training regime has been boxing since moving from wrestling, now has 2 KO victories in ManMMA vs. the afore mentioned Jim Miller aswell as well as Sean Sherk in last season's Grand Priz, earning him the nickname around Phoenix as "Dangerous" Mac Danzig. "Yeah, after that Sherk fight, Eddie Koch started with that one when were training one day." Danzig laughs, "Now everyone around the club is starting to use it. It's cool. It's nice to be noticed."
And noticed he was; 2 KO victories a unanimous decision over Yves Edwards, lead Danzig to his biggest fight to date in ManMMA; ManMMA 68 vs. B.J. Penn. Winning that fight would've put him at the top of the heap and made him the Lightweight No.1 contender to face Diego Sanchez for the title. "It's always disappointing to lose. No fighter likes losing and no fighter wants to lose, especially by KO and after training as hard as I did for that fight." says Danzig, "But despite being an arrogant prick most of the time, B.J. knows his stuff. I was able to get good control when we were on the ground, I just couldn't land hardly anything all night. I wasn't off, B.J. was just on."
Danzig gets cleaned up in his corner after being
KO'd in the 3rd Round by B.J. Penn at ManMMA 68.
Rumors have been swirling around ManMMA as to who Danzig's next fight will be, but Mac's focus remains the same "Doesn't matter to me who they put me up against next. I want the title. Plain and simple. And I'm going to everything in my power to get back to the top." Danzig proclaims, "The Penn fight was just a minor set back. You've got to learn from your mistakes and not dwell on them. I'll be back on top of it again before long."
The latest rumblings have Yves Edwards of Team Ferocity wanting a rematch with Danzig after going the distance and losing to Danzig by unanimous decision. When asked, Danzig didn't bat an eyelash, "Absolutely, I'll take that rematch. Yves is a scrappy guy and that was one hell of a fight. Not only for us but for the fans too. I'd be more than happy to take on Yves again."
No indication from the ManMMA brass as to what their plans are with Danzig yet after the loss to Penn, but rest assured that Danzig's name will be heard from again here in ManMMA as he says. "Count on it!".
