Complete FAQ
This is over-whelming. Help?
We know, but that's okay. First and foremost, if you have any questions, comments, concerns, or need ANY kind of clarification at all about anything, don't hesitate to PM The Sandmen. Don't be shy, he lives for this stuff and is a friendly bloke.
What fighters are eligible for ManMMA?
For a fighter to be ManMMA Eligible, they must be considered a "noteworthy fighter". For now, our definition of "Noteworthy" means their resume must include at least one of the following:
(Regardless of what is listed below, a fighter must have a Wikipedia page to be ManMMA-eligible)
- A champion from a major MMA organization*.
- A title contender from UFC, Pride, or Strikeforce.
- A UFC tournament or Pride Grand Prix win or runner-up.
- An Olympian who has at least 1 Professional MMA fight.
- A Pancrase champion
- An Ultimate Fighter "main season" winner with at least 1 subsequent UFC win.
- Any fighter on Fight Matrix's Top 25 fighters of all time in each weight class.
- Any fighter on the UFC's list of their top 200 fighters of all time.
- Any female fighter on any of Fight Matrix's "top" lists (for example, this).
- A fighter who has a pro MMA win over someone eligible via the above criteria (reviewed on a case-by-case basis - PM The Sandmen beforehand).
- If you don't want to put work into all this research and want to ask The Sandmen about a specific fighter, he will be happy do the research on your behalf.
*Major MMA organizations, for our purposes, are "Pride, Strikeforce, UFC, Bellator, WSoF, ONE, WEC, EliteXC, Cage Rage, Dream, Invicta, and Jewels".
How often will my fighters fight?
For regular ManMMA fights, a fighter fights about every 5th or 6th card. Champions always defend their belts every 3 cards. Fighters fighting in the #1 Contender tournaments fight on consecutive cards until they lose (or until the tournament ends). They will probably have more fights in a season than losing fighters.
How are number 1 contenders determined on ManMMA?
Through a revolving tournament cycle structure. Winner of the tournament gets a title shot. These are called "N1C" Tournaments.
How do N1C Tournaments work?
A tournament starts every 3 cards, beginning with 4 quarter finalists. Winners of each round will fight on the following card. Once a fighter wins a tournament, they will get approximately 3 cards off before their title fight.
How do I get into an N1C tournament?
Fighters start by fighting preliminary, non-tournament fights. Win those, and odds are that fighter will be in the next tournament of their weight class. Some exceptions apply, as tournament needs may vary.
What's the deal with weight classes here?
We have 4 male weight classes and 2 women's divisions. In ManMMA, we've merged real life weight classes into these categories:
ManMMA Weight Class | Real Life Weight Class |
Women's Flyweight | Flyweight and lighter |
Women's Bantamweight | Featherweight & Bantamweight |
Lightweight | Featherweight and lighter |
Welterweight | Lightweight & Welterweight |
Middleweight | Middleweight & Light Heavyweight |
Heavyweight | Heavyweight & Super Heavyweight |
What is this "SuperFight" Weight class?
SuperFight is not a weightclass, but it is a championship. One you challenge for, rather than one you win a tournament to get a shot at. Any male fighter at any weight class can challenge for this belt (in this thread). They will get a title shot when their turn comes up.
Do fighters get injured or fatigued?
They can get injured and miss fights, yes. They can get fatigued in fights, but once the event is over, there is little to no carry-over. For instance, if a fighter is forced to at back to back events, the effect will be minimal. It's still avoided when possible, however, since I believe it slightly increases the likelihood of injury.
How long is a "season"?
It's 20 ManMMA events. So the first event of a season will be a 01, 21, 41, 61, 81, etc. Sometimes, a special event will come up during a season, like a GrappleMania, or a special Versus challenge or something. These do not count towards the 20 ManMMA events that comprise a full ManMMA season.
What is "Zenith"?
Zenith is our 20th ManMMA event of each season. It's like the big finale of each season, and typically features a stacked card.
Can we trade fighters?
Yes
A fighter was awesome in 2000, but sucks now. How does that affect his ManMMA build?
Fighters on ManMMA are built as they were in the absolute best point of their MMA career. So in their prime.
What if a guy hasn't reached his prime yet? Do you upgrade them as they get better in real life?
No. builds are based on the best the fighter was UP TO THE DAY THEY ARE CREATED. This means if they have not reached their prime/best, they will not be automatically upgraded as improve in real life. They stay the way they were when you drafted them, and develop with the upgrades you put into them.
Can I make a ManMMA card?
Maybe. PM Sandmen about what you want to do. With the tournament structure, the space for making a regular ManMMA card is limited, but if you want to book a half-card, or if you want to make a special event, PM me and we'll figure it out.
How do I get points?
The main way is weekly. Every Monday, each team is given 2 points. In addition to that, however, you may earn points a number of different ways. For details, check out this thread.
Sometimes I see old posts about XP. What are XP?
XP were upgrade points for the now-obsolete mini-game league called The Managers League. We do not run that anymore, and now we just have Points, for upgrading your ManMMA fighters. So, if you see old references to XP vs. Points, just remember, XP = ML League, Points = ManMMA. Not that it matters anymore
Fighters can be upgraded. Is it possible to max out a fighter?
Yes, and you will be notified if you reach the max-out number.
Please explain
It's based on overalls, which are probably meaningless to you. But for the hardcore people who care, the complete list of caps and cap information can be found here.
Is this site optimized for a specific web browser?
Umm, technically no, but when creating banners, and doing anything in terms of layout and aesthetics, I do so with the latest version of Google Chrome. Sometimes I check it with Mozilla Firefox, but not often. We have had several complaints about Internet Explorer doing weird things, so if you use multiple browsers, might want to avoid that one if things behave or look weird here.
Can my fighter switch weight classes?
Maybe, as long as the fighter has fought at the new weight class in real life. PM The Sandmen with a request, and we will see what we can work out. (This has more to do with simulator than anything else).
Does a fighter's weight affect his/her performance?
No. From the program directly, "The fighter's weight doesn't affect the fighter's stats or performance but his weight class."
Does a fighter's height affect his/her performance?
Yes. From the program directly, "Taller fighters gain bonus points when they fight with smaller opponents."
What are the rules of ManMMA fights?
Title Fights - 10 rounds, 5 minute rounds.
Regular fights - 5 rounds, 5 minute rounds.
All fights - Elbows are allowed. Stomps and soccer kicks are not.
Judging - Pride-style, where the whole fight is evaluated, not just rounds.
What about special events, or exhibition fights?
Talk to The Sandmen. We don't do exhibition fights in terms of fights that do not count against a fighters record, though. Just special event fights. Again, wins/losses on those do still count though. Sometimes FiD implications as well.
I made the Grand Prix, but I would rather trade my spot for points. Can I do that?
No.
I upgraded my fighter, now he fights differently. What gives, bro?
Fighters have strategies based on their strengths and weaknesses. If you upgrade a fighters punching, for example, he will gain more confidence in striking and spent more time punching than he had in the past. This can work for them or against them. If you take a wrestler, and put too much into his stand-up, he might not be effective anymore, as he will spend less time on his original strength (takedowns) and more on one of his weaker areas that he has newfound confidence in (punches).
Does that affect defence too, like KO resistance?
Not that I have noticed, no. Defensive skills do not affect a fighters fighting strategies.
Can you tell me my guys overall, or his rating in a skill?
No. I don't look at this for myself, and I don't provide this information to anyone. It keeps things simple and fair.
How do I know what to upgrade my fighter in then?
Look at their fights. Stats are posted in each fight. If a guy is submitted every fight, he probably needs sub. defence. If he is taken down and GnP'd every fight, you might want to focus on takedown D. Just pay attention to their current and past fights and you will be fine.
Any other advice for upgrading?
Yes!
1) Take your time. For the most part, putting in a few upgrades and waiting to see how your fighter fights with those new upgrades can make a big difference - you might want to change your plan based on how he/she fights. This is particularly true with your fighters first few upgrades as a rookie.
2) Pick a strength and upgrade accordingly. The program balances attacks based on how good a skill is. So if you want your fighter to be a wrestler, do not upgrade punches.

Anything else I should know?
I guess just that this site operates very much on a "Spirit of the Law" over "Letter of the Law" system. In a nutshell, that means that the INTENT of a rule outweighs any oversights or omissions in the WORDING of the rule. (i.e. If a rule says "You can't upgrade your guy past 85", that does not mean you can upgrade your women to 100 just because they were not specifically included in the literal wording of the rule.) For the most part, I try to cover all loopholes, but sometimes unforeseen stuff comes up. In those cases, we look at WHY a rule exists, and remain consistent with the WHY more than the HOW of its wording. This avoids silly loopholes that can ruin the site, and also maintains the fun and integrity of the game as a whole for everyone.
