I see where you are coming from with your argument, but that is not how probability works. If someone tries for a takedown, one of 2 things will happen. The question is not IF he should have been GOING for the takedown (which is what you are arguing). It's the result.
Jones went for a takedown. A successful defence is not a stalemate, it's a defence. You can't flip a coin and expect it to come up "ribs". There are only 2 possibilities. Takedown defended, or takedown successful. The coin was flipped, and his takedown was successful.
Also...
Umm...Sylvia WAS off balance, as he was staggering from punches when Jones grabbed his leg.
