No one said anything about smart. But what that would show is you were capable of following direction and instruction, and completing tasks. Also, that you have some physical fine motor skills, and hand-eye co-ordination. Degrees say things, you just have to read between the lines.

Degrees say you are knowlegable in a particular field. it does not say you are smart, it does not say you have good hand eye co-oridination, it does not say you have fine physical motor skills.. it just says you went to classes and did tests and projects that you were able to pass. That is it.

That is it. Exactly. If you are able to pass tests and projects based on being able to, in your example, weave baskets, you have the skills to weave baskets, and all the skills associated with them, (such as hand-eye, and motor skills). And again, you keep talking about "smart". This idea of "smart" is just as subjective and biased as the concept of an IQ test. There is no such thing as just being, generally, smart. Every person has strengths and weaknesses. And every person knows something another person doesn't. IQ tests, degrees, etc are not a means of saying someone is GENERALLY smarter or better than someone. But it is safe to say someone with a PHD in Medicine knows more about medicine than someone without one.

but it does not mean that a PHD in medicine knows more than someone in basket weaving. Most of your point i agree with.. not all of it.
