I'd like to have the core discussion of, Are video games art?
Though my default reaction is yes, absolutely, when it comes to defining video game art, I am routinely at a loss.
To be a unique art, the form must have a component that makes it different from other established art forms (writing, poetry, painting and visual art, film, music, etc).
So, by that criteria, how do we define video games as a unique art in and of itself? My answer would be the INTERACTION: it is an interactive experience designed and controlled by a human creator (or several). The art of video games is not beautiful music, or pretty graphics, but the way in which the design allows you to interact with these pieces. Also, the way in which the game design draws your attention to and from certain places in each scene/level to hide or expose secrets and such.
But then, I am forced to ask myself, well, what separates THAT interactive experience from a fancy website, with lots of Flash coding and such? Is that art? By the definition I have chosen above, it's an interactive experience, designed and controlled by a creator.
What do people think?

I was thinking god of war, but maybe also some simpler less stunning but still beautiful games as well? And if it's an art form does playability have to be considered?

Sandman, your post didn't load the first time I read this, so I'll respond to it now.
All art is interactive, or it is not art, but the form the interaction takes can be unique to the art form (singing along with music). so what would make a video game be or not be art? If we said video game art is the art of creating methods of interaction using an input device within a specific artificial and screen based setting, then good video game art would be games that excel in the setting, the use of the input device (new and novel ways would most likely be praised over traditional forms) and the seamlessness or instinctual use of the device in interaction with the world.
For example: a game could be visually stunning, but have poor indicators for what in the setting can be interacted with and therefore not be 'good' video game art.
Did I ramble enough there?
