I'm going to try something for a while that is VERY hard to explain, but none-the-less thoroughly thought out. So don't be frustrated if you get confused - I won't be explaining this well, but in execution, it will work out kinda neat.
Starting this up-coming event, I'm breaking down each division into brackets that will fight in small single-night tournaments to determine next number one contender for each weight class. 8 fighters will be chosen (based on when they last fought) to be in the 31 contender tournament for that event. Everyone else in that weight class will also fight on that card, but not in the tournament. So ManMMA 124 will look like this.
ManMMA 124
Main Event: Middleweight Championship
Single Night tournament featuring 8 MW fighters (4 fights, then 2, then 1)
Remaining middleweight singles fights.
We have more heavyweights than other weight classes, so HW singles fights will appear on women's cards, and LW cards.
This should balance out to 17 fights per card now. 7 tournament fights, 9 singles fights, and 1 championship fight). So if ManMMA 124 is, for example, the MW card, 125 might be women, then 126 might be LW, 127 HW, and so on, etc, etc.
No one would be in 2 consecutive #1 contender tournaments, and so on. There are probably a few small things we'd need to iron out as we go, but I am gonna try this for a few events and see how it gels. If it works out well and we like it, we might keep it. If it takes longer than I think it will, or creates problems, it might be scrapped. But yeah, it's kind of a hybrid of the tournament contender format HammerFists suggested, and the whole keeping everyone fighting on a cycle thing I want. Plus, it ensures winners fight more too.
Thoughts? Questions? Comments? Concerns? Confusions?
