In one breath you say that Phaneuf is awful, then you say "but this team totally likes him" and you expect the Blues to trade one half of one of the best defensive pairings in the entire league (the younger one at that) for the crappy Phaneuf you keep bashing? It's not going to happen.

I think the Leafs are going to have a hard time 'trading' their way out of their mess, mostly because they have a lot of mid level guys and pay them a tonne. I think they need people who make mid level guys great- people who know how to make the most of what they've got, and then Leaf fans that accept that the Leafs are in yet again another 'building' phase while they pick up some new young untested talent. Maybe they'll get lucky.

Ryan Smyth was like that around the time before he became an Avs, and then when he was a King and continued to decline, it was clear he was past his prime for what he could offer a team. That type of hockey cripples players in a very short order. Ask Cam Neely.

Ryan Smyth was like that around the time before he became an Avs, and then when he was a King and continued to decline, it was clear he was past his prime for what he could offer a team. That type of hockey cripples players in a very short order. Ask Cam Neely. It actually wasn't that clear at all Mike. The reason his numbers declined last season then rose back up again this season was because the coach last season (Krueger) hardly gave him any ice time at all relegating a 6th overall pick to the 4th line, and gave him virtually no PP time and barely any PK time, electing to play all the young, and most of them inexperienced, kids that had virtually no NHL experience minus Hall, Eberle & Hopkins. This season, Eakins comes in and plays him in a 3rd/2nd line role in all situations (PP & PK) and, low and behold, his point production is right back where it should be for a player of his type and age. He probably could have played for another season, maybe more, to try and win a Cup, but he didn't want to be anywhere else but in Edmonton and with Mac-T likely reshuffling the deck again this off season, extending a contract to Smytty would be more of a courtesy after all he's done for the Oilers. I mean, as it should be, but the Oilers won't be Cup contenders for atleast another 3-4 seasons (or more) unless they are able to land some big fish UFA defenseman or trade for one. Smyth was/is still a useful player, and he even said himself that it was more mental than physical out there, even at his age, but when you start to lose the passion for the game, especially when you are a guy like Ryan is, it's for the best that he did retire now. I mean, last season was bad enough having to agonizingly watch Krueger misuse him and fuck up, knowing damn well that Smytth was still capable of about 85-90% of what he was in his prime and the moron coach was throwing it away cuz he had to play all the young pups. But if we had to watch it where it was really happening where age was visibly catching up to him and he was just out there as a sideshow attraction and taking up a roster spot because he's Ryan Smyth, then that would be just as agonizing as last season was under Krueger.

I like Bulldozers ideas for the Leafs. They are sooo typical Leaf fan ideas, it's hysterical. Like the whole, "Trade Kadri, Schenn, and a 1st for [Stamkos/Crosby/Malkin/Kovalchuk/ANYONE] we kept hearing back in the day. On Leaf boards, there was literally no one that fans thought Kadri, Schenn and a 1st could not acquire. It was the funniest shit. Then I see it continue now, with the mess Bulldozers presented, and it makes me sad. I thought we grew up since then.

They all did. That's why all Leaf fans thought he and a pick were worth Crosby + a pick. *sigh @ Leaf fan logic*

Not sure what you said makes sense. If we all thought that Schenn was garbage then why would he and a pick be worth Crosby?? I think that the Flyers overpayed for him when we got JVR for him.

I remember being pissed at the JVR deal because at the time he came back from concussion problems and Schenn was struggling under a new system. I now see that we won the deal, but it was by no means a landslide feeling when it happened.
