Haven't seen this before, but was aware it was a rule.
Anyone have any thoughts on this?

I think I might be the only one that doesn't mind the mix of grey and black on Bas Rutten's mini-beard.

No, I totally love mixed grey beards. I am all proud cause i have 1 or 2 grey hairs in my own beard right now. It's the epitome of awesome.

for the record.. I think the ref should have given him a warning to get up and fight. instead of an instant DQ cause the other guy wasn't fighting either..

I haven't seen the fight, but I kinda thought he did give him several warnings to engage. I also gathered that the opponent was trying to fight, but he was trying to keep the fight standing and the other guy kept falling down trying to bait him into a ground fight. I might seek out the full fight.

well the guy was on his back... but beckoning the other guy to fight on the ground with him... his opponent was not falling for it... who is at fault? who knows.. cause the one guy didn't want to fight on his feet and the other guys didn't want to fight on the ground.. who steps up and fights in the other persons game? i dunno... you can't force a guy to fight standing and you can't force a guy to fight on the ground. you can only warn that something has to happen.

The way fighting works though, is you stand on your feet. That's the default starting position. It's the job of ground fighters to get the fight to the ground. Not to sit there and expect the other guy to come to you. If you want to fight BJJ only, then enter a BJJ tournament. This is MMA, and in MMA, you start standing, and if you want to go to the ground, take the guy down or pull guard. The fault here is entirely on the laziness of the ground fighter, in my opinion. You gotta earn the ground.

OR you have to rely on the stupidness of the stand up fighter..

Yes. And if the stand up is not stupid enough to engage, it's your job to make him. Just like if a stand up fighter wants you to stand and you keep taking him down. The onus is on him to stop your takedowns. You have to earn the right to remain standing vs. a wrestler or good takedown submission fighter in the same way.

It is the duty of any fighter to fight the fight the way you think you need to fight. and to stop your opponent from dragging you into his fight. In this match.. it seemed like he wanted to bypass the takedowns and just get the other guy to fight on his level... any stand up fighter would be stupid to do this. if you see a tactic is not working.. you can lie on your back and ask your opponent if he wants to wrestle... no problem.. BUT if your opponent says no.. then stand up and fight like a man and take his butt down and wrestle him anyways. don't just expect that your opponent will be forced to fight they way you want him to
