I always wanted a rink, but we had a slope in our front yard and a pool in our backyard. What's that you say? Simple solution of make your pool a rink? That's what I said! But apparently, skates can slice the liner of a pool, so you are not allowed to do that, as liner can cost upwards of $3000. When I moved into my current house, it had a pool, and I immediately began ripping it out the spring we moved in. My good friend later pointed out I was a moron, and it would have made a perfect rink that winter (since it had sides that could be boards, etc. One of my biggest regrets to this day. Stupid being a grown-up

Oh man, I never even thought of that! That's too bad, that could have been wicked. You would have been the king of your community!

We have a beauty right down the road from us. It's outdoor, but it's a covered, legit rink - Zamboni'ed and everything. You can play and sometimes the snow will blow lightly onto the ice. It's kinda magic.

when i was in grade 6 till 9 I lived in a house where just behind my house was my school... on the other side of the school was a outdoor rink... it had lights and a warming hut there so you could buy a snack or go in and warm up then go back out and freeze... I remember several times i would go out to that rink and it would be snowing nobody else was around and it was absolutely surreal.. it was soooooo amazing and it truly was one of the best memories in my life I ever had.

I remember when I was in grade 5, our school had an outdoor rink and every school in the town was having their kid's do these races for speedskating. Doing this on a shitty outdoor rink was difficult as fuck, and it came down to me and my close friend, Mark. (@justin: the guy that told all the stories at my wedding).
Anyways, it's two laps, and we are just about to finish the first lap, and mark hits a pretty significant divot in the ice and basically flies into the boards. I stop skating to go and help him back up (he was also a much better skater than I was, pretty fast) and everyone that's watching is screaming at me to finish the race in a "come on underdog, this is your big chance!" I was torn and when you have your entire school yelling at you, you kind of cave easily. So I just kind of finished the race in a half-assed gliding type way, hoping Mark would get back up and catch up and beat me - like he should have. But he didn't. He was a kid, he as hurt, he was embarassed in front of the school for falling and hurting himself. So right after I crossed the line, I went over to him, helped him back up and shield him from the school, and then we just walked back to the ice-hut. Didn't bother doing the stupid local newspaper interview and all this other dumb crap.
Two weeks later, at our town's arena, I compete against all the other schools. I lose. Badly.

As far as races go when i was in grade 9 i was a thin kid... (i know hard to believe) but i was a good long distance runner... every gym class I would out run every other student.. i went to our schools track and field day and won a couple long distance runs.. I participated in the city's long distance city run that they did.. and i finished 7th out of the entire city. I went to the city track and field meet and got destroyed.. Not really sure how i got destroyed like that when i had been doing so well.

Tee hee hee, track and field. In grade 7 rather than do a whole day of school my friend and I signed up for track and field. We entered as "Ball throw", which for me is a joke cause I was a wimpy little bitch-thrower. So during track "practice" all we did was play catch and shoot the shit (cause, you know, that is how you practice for ball throw).
Track and field day, we miss our day of school, throw the ball twice, (get slaughtered, I think I came last and he probably came about 3rd or 4th last), and just hung out with the runners and everything all day. Needless to say, a pair of 12 year old boys chillin' with athletic track & field chicks all day was not a bad day at all. I think his mom got us early, after most of the events ended, and we got off at like, 2 instead of 3:30.
Moral: Do track and field instead of going to class. You get to talk to hot chicks and throw a ball twice.

No, this was ball throw. We used softballs. I guess it's probably pre-shotput experience, but yeah. Softballs.

I was not partaking in it due to it's quality. I was partaking in it due to it's "I don't have to actually train or do anything and I get a day off school".

...anyways....
In high school, we had girls hockey at our school but not boys hockey. Did anyone else have that bullshit go on at their school?
