(For you long-time ManMMAers, I know technically I used that name for a tournament we had before, but I like it and kinda wanna bring it back in something new.)
I'm trying to fine-tune this core idea into something that makes sense for next season.
Core Idea I Think Would be Cool:
- you pay a point (per fighter, if applicable), to enter a single-night tournament.
- the winner of the tournament wins the buy-in points.
Grit to be sorted out:
- Initially, I wanted this to be at ManMMA 339 (or 359, or what have you - the event before Zenith), since we have no titles on the line that event or anything, but people submitting their best fighters there would pull them off of Zenith, and I don't really want that.
- I can do 16, 8, or 4 fighter tournaments. 16 fighter tournaments would take up the bulk of a card on their own. If we wanted to have this event mid-season, we could do that and it would not matter.
- Since there would only be 16, or 8, or 4 spots, I was thinking first come, first serve - so if we had a total of 5 teams entered, (and people didn't want to buy-in a second fighter if we allowed that), the first 4 would get a spot, and we would go with a 4-person, single night tournament. To make it a legit single-night tournament in the programs eyes (thus having stamina, cuts, and small injuries carry over), I cannot do byes, or round robins or anything.
- The thought had occurred to me to that with a payout potentially up to 16 points, this could be bigger than the Grand Prix, and could be used in place of it? I don't think I like that idea though. So maybe the numbers cost vs. payout should be fine-tuned? 1 point buy-in, 4 points for winning the tournament? Match the Grand Prix, but have it take place mid-season?
- Weight classes. I don't think it makes sense to make it open-weight, so I think one of several things. Either the weight class is randomized, or the person who chooses the weight class is randomized. Or we put it to a vote each season. I kind of like randomized though. Anyways, I think it would be much funner if the weight class was selected AFTER the buy-in was completed. So, a lot like the blinds in poker, you are buying in before you see your hand or how things might play out. Kinda cool and doesn;t give anyone a specific advantage.
- I would also suggest that no champions could be involved, except maybe the SuperFight champion? I like the idea of a title changing hands once or more in a tournament, but people didn;t want them at the GP, so maybe in this one?
I'm not sure this will whole come about, but the main elements of this I would consider deal-breakers are those listed in the "core idea" section - a single night, buy-in tournament.
Please comment below. And please include how you feel about the core suggestion in your response. If you like the core suggestion but don;t like or have 100 suggestions about the grit parts, please say so. If you hate the core suggestion, you can basically just say that, with no need to go over the grit parts.
