If you are a Rousey fan, watching this fight you would be infuriated and frustrated. If you were a Zoila fan, and you saw what she was doing, this was a masterpiece performance. From the beginning, Zoila came out, landed a 3 punch combo and hurt Rousey. This put Rousey into beast mode, and she beast-moded all over Zoila for the next 3.5 rounds. And Zoila let her, all the while conserving her energy. By half way through the 4th, Rousey was very low on stamina and Zoila was at 100%. She started chipping away a bit at Rousey in the 4th, and probably evened up their health for that point (though overall, with the whole fight in consideration, Rousey had done a lot more damage up to this point). But in the 5th, it was ALL Zoila and she dominated Rousey for 5 straight minutes. If this fight went a 6th round, she almost certainly would have finished it there, and in the 5th Rousey was closer to being finished than anyone else was at any time prior in this fight.
So if I am scoring the fight based on the whole-fight scoring system, I would look at it this way:
Time dominating – Rousey
Total damage – even
Closeness to finishing opponent – Zoila
If you want to look at things like effective striking, control, etc, they get more subjective, as what is effective, dominating longer, or strike accuracy? And what about strategy? So we score strategy? If so, Zoila wins that, cause if this fight was 4 mins longer, she would have won pretty much for sure. Rousey was not in the fight during that last round. But then again, isn’t an effective strategy based around doing what you can and should in a limited time frame? It’s a beautiful puzzle and a beautiful fight and I look forward to the rematch (unless it’s another draw, that would hurt me a lot from a booking perspective)!

If you are a Rousey fan, watching this fight you would be infuriated and frustrated. If you were a Zoila fan, and you saw what she was doing, this was a masterpiece performance. From the beginning, Zoila came out, landed a 3 punch combo and hurt Rousey. This put Rousey into beast mode, and she beast-moded all over Zoila for the next 3.5 rounds. And Zoila let her, all the while conserving her energy. By half way through the 4th, Rousey was very low on stamina and Zoila was at 100%. She started chipping away a bit at Rousey in the 4th, and probably evened up their health for that point (though overall, with the whole fight in consideration, Rousey had done a lot more damage up to this point). But in the 5th, it was ALL Zoila and she dominated Rousey for 5 straight minutes. If this fight went a 6th round, she almost certainly would have finished it there, and in the 5th Rousey was closer to being finished than anyone else was at any time prior in this fight.
So if I am scoring the fight based on the whole-fight scoring system, I would look at it this way:
Time dominating – Rousey
Total damage – even
Closeness to finishing opponent – Zoila
If you want to look at things like effective striking, control, etc, they get more subjective, as what is effective, dominating longer, or strike accuracy? And what about strategy? So we score strategy? If so, Zoila wins that, cause if this fight was 4 mins longer, she would have won pretty much for sure. Rousey was not in the fight during that last round. But then again, isn’t an effective strategy based around doing what you can and should in a limited time frame? It’s a beautiful puzzle and a beautiful fight and I look forward to the rematch (unless it’s another draw, that would hurt me a lot from a booking perspective)!
