Some Notes:
The special Cannon vs. PHX challenge created a few complexities, so there are a couple special things happening here that I want to explain:
- First, the challenge. As you can see, and if you have been living under a rock, there is a Versus Challenge on this card.
- Second, I decided not to randomize the Bantamweight fights in the challenge, because both Tate and Holm were scheduled to be in the tournament that began on this card. By having them fight each other as part of the challenge, I was able to keep both in the BW #1C tournament.
- Third, for several big reasons, there will be a shortened HW #1C tournament this round. Typically, a HW Semi-finals round would take place on this card. However, the match-ups made absolutely no sense (considering the finals would be Zenith fights), so in the interest of keeping Zenith epic, I made an executive decision, skipped the semi-finals, and promoted the special Cro Cop vs. Liddell challenge to a #1 Contender fight at Zenith. I could not move that fight here as a semi-finals fight, because part of the reason for the challange was having Chuck Liddell's 100th fight be at Zenith. Their opponents would have been late-ranked guys, or guys on losing streaks, so the allure would have been greatly diminished.
- Fourth, because of the original terms of the challenge, which mostly did not change when the stakes did, champions are allowed to compete in this challenge. This is NOT a precedent, and will likely never happen again. No titles are on the line, and the fights are not title-rule fights. When the original challenge was made, both teams were fighting to be here. I did not want to close off any avenues of competition, and so I allowed champions to be in there. Champions were included in the original lists I collected, and I will, THIS ONE TIME ONLY, allow champions to compete without consequence in this special event.
Reminders:
- aside from the Tate-Holm tournament fight, all special challenge fights were randomized.
- no titles are on the line on this card
- there are no additional bragging rights for "beating the champion", and Jason MacDonald does not become any sort of "technical champion" if he wins, since Machida is not fighting him under championship rules.
- the loser of this challenge will be branded the loser of this challenge in one form or another (sig branding, having it appear under his name on-site for a period of time, etc).
