(Spoilers...obviously)
At ManMMA 221, we saw Middleweight Luke Rockhold get knocked out. That was exciting. Until we realize this: - It was by a light heavyweight. - Who was a short-notice replacement - Who did not strain his body by making weight - In a fight Rockhold would have almost-certainly lost his title shot by declining. - At a PPV that would have been cancelled entirely if Rockhold had have declined the fight.
So I'm not entirely sure I could have imagined a more lose-lose lose-scenario for Rockhold here.
People I talk to keep being like, "Bro, Romero missed weight by 3 pounds, what does that matter come fight day when they are both much heavier anyway?"
First up, Dana, is that you?
Second. Weight cutting. Everyone who has ever cut weight talks about how the last few pounds are the hardest. The scientific reason for this is your body sheds water to cut weight. But at a certain point, your body stops sweating, and you have to work a lot harder to sweat and lose weight. That is typically the last 1-3 pounds.
And cutting weight is a huge drain. They talk about this all the time in MMA. Often, it takes longer than a day to recover (which is in part why they moved weigh-ins to the morning before a fight instead of the night before the fight).
Anyway, by Romero not cutting the extra weight (you know, the weight Rockhold cut?) he had a clear stamina advantage vs. where he SHOULD have been for the 185 fight he agreed to. His body should have still been in recovery mode from making 185. Instead, he fought over the weight limit for Middleweight (meaning he fought at Light Heavyweight), had the stamina and therefore power, and got the V. Rockhold, meanwhile, got nothing but the D in this scenario.

Yeah I like Romero but come on. The dude has gotten away with too much and now Rockhold probably won't get his title opportunity after losing to someone that Dana White normally would have fired for missing weight in such an important event. This whole situation was bullshit.

What did Rockhold do to earn a title shot anyway!? It would have been an intriguing fight, but he was coming off one win against David fucking Branch

What did Rockhold do to earn a title shot anyway!? It would have been an intriguing fight, but he was coming off one win against David fucking Branch - Be Champion in Strikeforce, then get passed over in a unification fight with Anderson. - Having his subsequent loss be at the hands of someone juiced to the gills on TRT. - Go on a 5 fight win streak, knocking off 3 current, former, or future champions. - Become UFC champion (which he won while he had a staff infection). - Be widely considered a favourite in a rematch with the guy who beat him for the belt - also widely considered a fluke win in a fight Rockhold took too easily (on 3 weeks notice) - Dominate the WSoF champion, despite being out for over a year with injuries. - Accept a fight with a Light Heavyweight for the Middleweight Championship on short notice. I mean, any of these things really... Not to mention how is this your argument when: - Romero is coming off a loss - Romero just lost to the champion - Romero was supposed to FIGHT David Branch, when he was given the Rockhold fight. - Romero is just 2 fights removed from a USADA violation.

1) No one has ever said spewing off what people say makes them facts. Facts make them facts. Common knowledge among the MMA community makes them facts. Research makes them facts.
2) I didn't accuse me of trying to be a scientist - you did. However, if presenting established, researched facts makes one a scientist around here, then sure...I'm a scientist.
Da fuck?
