I just watched an episode of WWE Saturday Morning Slam - a 30 min program rated G and geared towards kids. It includes a couple segments, like anti-bullying school campaigns and things like that. The show is topped off with a lone match, which is to include no neck moves or locks to avoid the appearance of violence, and, presumably, decrease incidence of kids copying potentially dangerous moves (DDTs, headlocks, chokes, etc.)
So for those of us who grew up watching the Attitude Era of Stone Cold Steve Austin, DX, The Rock, Val Venis, etc. umm....how does this make you feel?
My take is this - I am actually kind of glad. I am happy the WWE is trying to rebrand itself as a family promotion. Most of us know that the adults who used to go to the bar, grab a beer and watch Stone Cold are now out watching Anderson Silva. My opinion is that the UFC has taken a large portion of the adult WWE fan base, and that it is in no way a bad thing for the WWE to focus on a younger generation. This type of family programming is welcome. And to be honest, after watching the first episode of Saturday Morning Slam, I was pleasantly surprised. The match was enjoyable, and the whole thing was fun. A throwback, almost, to the glory days of Hulk Hogan and real Saturday Morning wrestling.
AND, to top all of THIS off....we all know where the WWF went when the kids who grew up on Hulkamania turned into teenagers - Wrestling got BIG, and those kids grew up. Get the kids addicted when they are young, and keep them on for a generation ANd who knows; perhaps this is the beginning of a new cycle. Maybe in another 10 years, we will have raunchy wrestling back. INTERESTING STUFF.
What do you guys think?
