The problem wasn't Sony, it was a consumer issue. Consumers wanted a product that could record longer. The Beta could only hold up to an hour of recording, whereas VHS could hold 2. When this came down to things like recording television shows and such, an extra hour is a HUGE difference, and people chose quantity over quality. They could record a movie off TV with 1 VHX tape and a timer, but they could not do that with Beta. Beta was a superior product though, and not even that long ago a lot of TV stations were using various forms of BetaMax in broadcasting. I know what you're talking about, except that they could fit full length movies on Beta; we owned quite a few of them. The problem was that the Beta technology could ONLY tape at the one tape speed. VHS developed a way to do LP & SLP recording, which is what separated the two. That part is correct, but Sony still wouldn't give up the patent or the licensing to other companies to reproduce it, which was also what led to it's demise.

I have about 5 boxes of VHS tapes and 2 VCR's still. Nice. I have been trying to collect good VCRs lately. I used to have about 100 VHS tapes, but I just got rid of a lot of them about a year or two ago. They were mostly mainstream stuff that it doesn't matter so much about that I can get on DVD and stuff like that. But I still have a fair amount of irreplaceable VHS stuff that I need VCRs for. There are also about movies I wanna pick up somewhere at some cheap VHS place that I am sure I will find. Like "Oh Canada The story of the 1993 Toronto Blue Jays". HAven't been able to find that online anywhere. I kinda wanna start hunting the 25 cent bins now too for crappy old action/horror flicks that never made it to DVD too. Those are totally what VHS was made for, hahaha. [I know what you're talking about, except that they could fit full length movies on Beta; we owned quite a few of them. They could for studio-released movies, yes. I had several too. I mean for home-video. So when you were sitting in a store, debating about whether to get a Beta or VHS to record your favourite programs, you could do 1 hour, or 2. (and as you said, later more). Just like anything, the consumer dictates the market more than the companies. If we want it, we buy it. Unrelated, I think its neat some indy movie studios are releasing things on VHS only as throw-back now. GO TROMA GO!

I agree. It's like folks recording music on vinyl again. It's pretty neat stuff.

Yes. Although there is a definite sound advantage with vinyl. Not so sure VHS quality was that great compared to DVD/BD, hahaha.

My GodFather that just passed away, he had about 20 VCR's when he passed. You would think he was collecting them or something.
I have so many of the Disney classics that are suppose to be worth something from when my son was a kid.

I agree PHX. Betas were also hip cause they were tiny and tiny is where its at. That;s what she tells me, at least.
And Storm, I would so love 20 VCRs, hahaha. I think I only have about 2 working ones now. Used to have about 8, but most were cheap and I use them every night, so they died pretty fast. My GOOD, expensive, heavy-as-fuck JVC JUST conked out a few months ago. Old school heavy stuff with legit parts, etc.
Those Disney movies! Yeah, my cousin was collecting those cause they were worth money too. I donno about unopened ones, but now I see all of those movies that were part of the Masterpiece Collection and stuff at hock shops for like, 50 cents each. Kinda shows the artificial value Disney creates with their "back in the Disney vault" bullshit. Still very nice VHS tapes though. I might start getting them now that i think of it. Be a nice little collection for the Man Cave. A bit creepy I guess, but it would still look cool.

I have one working VRC and it's awful. That said, get a VRC/DVD recorder with the built in hard drive, you can play the VHS and record it to the hard drive and later burn it to DVD, so it's the quality of VHS with the playability of DVD, so if it ever gets destroyed you still have it. Also, with the vinyl, I have a huge Vinyl collection. In fact, a few years ago, I even found an old, old wrestling songs intro vinyl that I picked up and gave to Sandman as a gift.

The Rocketmen I still have that and actually just rocked out to some Real American about a month ago when I made sure the record player was set up good and proper. Great stuff! xx - Team GAP I like the Blu too, but I am talking mostly about the fun old shit that was never released on anything before or after VHS. Good old terrible VHS horror/sci fi is where its at. xx - Former Phoenix Fight Club LASERDISCS! I have 4 LDs and no LD player. I kinda want one though.
