Sonnen was dangerous with those takedowns, and Le is definitely weak in the area of takedown defence and ground defence, but Le was able to keep enough of the fight standing to land kicks. Dangerous Le kicks. Bruce kicks. Deathy kicks. Sexy kicks.

But not grounded and then pounded? The act of grounding is secondary to the act of pounding in this case? We've neglected the act of grounding as a verb in this case, have we? It wasn't part of the action? It was secondary and inconsequential, was it?

Ah, my good friend, sure, sure indeed. But you did not say "ground and pound", which in and of itself is a verb. What you said was "ground and pounded", which, not being a thing in and of itself, can only be two completely separate words and ideas. The result of which invariably leads one to the conclusion that the actions are entirely independent, as you have crafted the words to be, thus the actions themselves are not related. This is significantly different than saying a person was grounded (the act of being placed on the mat, in MMA jargon) and pounded (the act of pounding, in past tense). Though I am not one to nitpick linguistics, I am definitely interested in what you are conveying to us, as I sincerely value your opinions and insights, both linguistically and in regards to MMA.
