So, for the longest time I had a crappy old record player with pretty good (but old) speakers. But all I had to listen to was an old WWF record Mikey gave me (which is awesome, but how many times can you listen to Real American?), and Utopia'sDeface the Music - your life is better if you never Google this band.
Yesterday I raided my dad's collection, now I've actually got some stuff to listen to and am happy. Yay vinyl simming music!
Highlights include: AC/DC - Back in Black AC/DC - Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap The Rolling Stones - Hot Rocks 1964–1971 Creedence Clearwater Revival - Greatest Hits
Though small, this new mini-collection makes me very happy.

My mom had some Elvis Christmas or something. I passed on that for what I feel are rather obvious reasons...

You know, there's this cool thing called iTunes. iTunes and downloaded/digital music is compressed. Analog is not, and has a richer, cleaner, warmer sound. If you are a big audiophile, vinyl's the way to go. I am not hardcore, but I can hear the sound quality difference. (And that's not old man nostalgia, I grew up on cassettes and CDs - just started sampling records recently)

it's a different experience altogether. I would never give up my MP3s, but I love to listen to a record. I love putting a record on, placing the needle just so, listening to music I haven't heard in years. I remember when I was allowed to put on records independently for the first time- it was a big deal- my dad's record collection was strictly a kids do not touch zone and I was finally entrusted with the responsibility.

Okay, here's a small sample size of my collection (about 150):
The Monks - Bad Habits (been obsessed with this album since I was four, suspended from school in grade 1 for repeatedly singing "I got drugs in my pocket and I don't know what to do with them.")
Rush's entire collection MINUS A Farewell to Kings
Metallica's Kill 'Em All (picture disc) Metallica's Ride the Lightning (picture disc) Metallica's Master of Puppets (picture disc) Metallica's Load
The Mars Volta - Deloused in the Comatorium (silver vinyls) Every Coheed album on vinyl EXCEPT Second Stage (I will own this soon enough).
Styx - Grand Illusion Bruce Springstein - Born in the USA Michael Jackson - Thriller (because fuck yes) Postal Service - Give Up (one of my pride and joy buys) The Archies (yes, THE Archies). The Chipmunks Christmas Cheryl Lois and Braham bilingual sing-along (will be great when I have a kid) The Human League Bee Gees (I forget which one, but I bought it because the vinyl case was gorgeous and has ships all over it)
Also, I should share this neat little fact:
Led Zeppelin's In Through the Out Door:
In Through The Out Door. There were 6 different covers -- of all them different angles of the same scene; a man sitting at a bar burning at Dear John letter. The outer sleeve was made to look like a brown paper bag, while the inner sleeve was the artwork. There was a brush stroke on each picture and if you applied water to it, it would turn to color.

maybe only the insane listen to records? So... back in the day there was a series of records called "cruisin" and for reasons unbeknownst to me my father owned 'Cruisin' 1969" I don't remember ever actually listening to this album, but as kids we thought it looked soooo cool. NO cassette ever looked as cool as this. Listening wise, I apparently knew all the words to "the Edmund Fitzgerald" by age 4.... just what you want you're 4 year old girl singing about right? Horrible ship wrecks for everyone! but see, my parents were relieved because it meant I was no longer singing the Divinyls "I touch myself". Yep. I just re-read this message and realize it's all over the fucking place. Hope no one wanted coherency, cause we're all sold out here.
