I think what it comes down to is that everyone has toughness, everyone has stamina, and everyone has strength. If all you're doing is applying your upgrades to punches or kicks, then you're wide open to every other thing that could ever happen to you. If you're upgrading takedowns, then sure, you can still take the punch, and the guy can't defend the takedown - game over. So anyone can take a punch, but if you can't keep the fight standing, then you're basically a sitting duck.
