Came here to start random conversations that hopefully don't end up in fights. If a fight breaks out, hopefully it gets moved elsewhere.
Anyways, so I picked up a few Criteron films. I have six more on the way. My collection is now up to 35 titles. Anyone else collect?

I've picked up a couple over the years.

Is there one that you have that you're like "yeah, that's my holy grail."

Probably my entire Criterion wall of about 300 Blu rays They are like my children. I love them as individuals, and as a collective.

For me, Salo is coming in next week along with Amarcord. Just gotta get my hands on Rome, Open City and at this point I'm just picking up the ones that excite me as I go. Is JAcuqes Tati worth going after?

Jacques Tati is reasonably good fun, and well-known classics, but I was surprised to learn I actually found Peirre Etax's collection funnier than Tati's. Tati's is still great, but I giggled more at Etax than Tati.

A lot of people say that Roshomon and the 400 Blows are pretty much must haves. Anything in particular that does it? Is it the films themselves or are the special features just packed with documentaries that it's worth getting?

Did you see Hero? Rashomon is like that - the same story told I think 3 times, from 3 different perspectives, and the truth of the core of the story kind of changes with each perspective. Ground-breaking stuff, and I liked it when I saw it many years ago. It's very high up my "Rewatch this because you remember nothing from it" list.
400 Blows is mostly because it was a major part of the French New Wave. I like it, it's also on the rewatch list (haven't seen it since Hoi's class, many, many years ago). In terms of special features, the DVD (from the Antoine Doinel Box Set) is actually slightly better - it includes an extra short film the Blu Ray releases don't include - Antoine and Collete.

Scout Amazon before you hit HMV. Amazon is usually cheaper than HMV.

It wasn't last time I went. Totalled it, and saved about 30 bucks, so it's like getting one for free for the 9 that I bought last weekend.

K. Cause usually the stuff that is 30 at HMV is 26-28 on AMazon, and the stuff that is 35 at HMV is 31 on Amazon, and so on. Sadly, even with the shitty exchange rate, I still think Barnes and Noble's the cheapest route.

Yeah, I'm still waiting it out to see how hard I get hit from Barnes and Noble.

Random reccomendations or just...Criterion Babble:
If you like feeling sad, Shoah is a good pick up. 6-8 hours of Holocaust documentary - talking heads, not gorey pictures, but an excellent masterpiece for sure. Also includes 2 other related films by the director as well.
I want Grand Illusion. It's only on DVD, but it's stupid spine #1, and my OCD is going insane not having that, lol. Outside of that, the other DVD-Only releases I am really interested in are Bicycle Thieves, La Strada, Ikiru, Ran, and The Human Condition.
